The One Principle you Must Learn to be Financially independent

Some of the most important things a young person needs to learn and understand are never taught in school or even at home by their parents. It's really sad that most people never truly understand how money and money management are critical to live a successful, stress free life , where YOU are in control of your future irregardless of your job situation or outside forces you have no control over.  The subject of Personal Finance can be complex and involved the more you get into it, but I think the number one principle you must accept and incorporate into your being is simple : you have to spend less than you earn, and invest the difference in something that goes up in value. DSCN5715                                                                        It doesn't matter if you make 10,000 dollars a year or 10 million,   if you don't live with your "means" you will eventually run into financial trouble,(there have been countless numbers of pro athletes, music and film stars, lottery winners and others that have gone gone broke) this one habit will insure you are financially stable for a lifetime. You have to train yourself to be willing to make sacrifices to become financially independent, It may mean no Starbucks coffee everyday, brown bagging your lunch at work, buying a good used car instead of new, etc.  etc you get the drift. You have to be determined and laser focused at first in your quest to be one of the few people that when life throws you a curve ball you calmly swing and hit it out of the park ... like no big deal!                                                                               DSCN5682  Once you master this principle of personal finance and start saving and investing you'll have plenty of these in your reserves!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             John

Old Hickory Lake Fishing Tips – Springtime / April

Hendersonville, Tn  :  Fishing style is a personal preference and for me light tackle fishing has reigned supreme for not only catching numbers of fish but also plenty of big trophy size fish. Normally when I go out I'll have 4-6 rods rigged and ready to go, with line test ranging from 6 - 10 lb. It may seem strange to some but I will target different species at the same time depending on how they are biting. One of my favorite ways to catch fish is with a crankbait and one of my favorites is this Bagley Killer b2 that I have been using since the early 80's. I have caught many hundreds of fish with this one lure including large and smallmouth bass, crappie, catfish, rockfish and even bluegill and drum.
Vintage Bagley in copper foil, these have been discounted years ago. I was turned on to these at a fishing show by a Potomac river guide, and I bought about a dozen or so back in the 1980s and now I am down to my last couple.

Next up is a 3" grub on a 1/16 ounce jighead , then a 1/4 ounce spinnerbait, then a 4th rod  rigged with a slip float and a small hair jig or a bare jig which minnows can be added.                                                     Start searching for brush piles / planted structure at the points leading into the coves/cuts off the main lake or in any of the creeks, as this is where the majority of crappie and other fish will stage. On Old Hickory Lake there is a lot of planted brush in 15 feet or so of water. When you find a good spot your fishfinder will really light up. Use a marker buoy close by but not directly on the pile. I will flip out the grub to quickly determine if they are active and normally catch quite a few right off the bat, if action slows change lure colors and then you can always go to the live minnows.                                                                                                                         DSCN5640     When your fishing the brush piles for crappie in the spring It seems you always get some nice bass as well, such as this one who hit a live minnow fished on a small jighead.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Normally when I start fishing in the morning I like to start shallow and cover water quickly casting the bagley or using a spinnerbait. I have caught some of my biggest OHL bass up shallow in the early AM. If I get on 'em shallow I will then go back through the same area with my other lures and then eventually make passes through at deeper depths and eventually end back at the deep water brush piles.
Everything and I do me EVERYTHING hits a smoke colored grub!
Everything and I do mean EVERYTHING hits a smoke colored grub!
A 3" grub on a 1/16 ounce jig head is one of the all-time great lures, and can be mastered with regular practice. A slow swimming retrieve and a basic lift/drop technique are two popular ways of working it. Use a light action rod and 6 or 8 lb test line.

Hank Williams Jr, An Icon who doesn’t want to be called one

Hank-Williams-JrI became a fan of Hank's back in the early 80's when I bought "The pressure is on" his album that had 'Country boy can survive ' and other great songs on it. He is that rare artist that does his own thing regardless of what the establishment want's him to do. A true Artist and even though I don't know him personally I think a great person as well.                                                                                                                                            I was pleasantly surprised recently when I saw a Hank Jr. special on AXSTV recently, It was filmed at his place in Tennessee and included both a stripped down outdoor (in his yard by his cabin) performance that was pure Hank, and also a interview that was truly revealing. He is doing this to promote his new album :  "It's About Time" which seems to be good enough to propel Hank back on top!   Here's a new video:                                                                            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sq0R5oPl-yQ                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Thanks for the new music Hank , Now get out there and catch a bunch of Crappies!                                                                                                                         John

A Most Unusual Sight in Hendersonville,Tn

All the way towards the back of the Walton ferry peninsula in Hendersonville, which is just to the northeast of Nashville is a rare thing in today's world; someone who has resisted the chance to cash in by selling their long held business. It's called lakeshore campground with about 15 or so spacious sites. It appears that most campers are there year round so it provides a economical way to be right on the lake.

A blue heron looking for a meal, sometimes they'll hunt for hours before finally striking and catching a fish
Years ago I was told by a long time Hendersonville realtor/developer that he had tried to buy the parcel but was repeatedly shot down. He said it was owned by a women who had no use for developers...  Right next to the campground is a development of large houses that extend out and around a nice prominent point into the lake. Directly across the creek is Walton ferry park/ramp and adjacent to that is a mobile home community for seniors that has probably 50 or so homes..... maybe the same women owns both places?                                                                                                                   John and                                                                                                                Debbie                                                                                                                             http://debbiemeyers.realtor                                                                cropped-DSCN5371-1.jpg

Walton and Sanders Ferry peninsula , Hendersonville,Tn

DSCN5599This area has everything from beautiful parks and full service marina's with plenty of restaurants and housing from apartments and condo's thru small single family houses up to waterfront estates. The north part is up at main street and sanders ferry road parallels Drakes creek as it flows toward the main stem of the Cumberland river and Old hickory lake. Once on Sanders ferry road just off main street there are gas stations, restaurants, and other small business's then you'll see Mallard point park on the left. It is one of the most busy of the ramps in the area. As you travel down further you'll pass two big full service marina's and then you turn left to stay on sanders ferry road and then you enter sanders ferry park . Which is a huge (several hundred acres) park with the biggest launch pad around.

There is always plenty of houses for sale in every price range and as you can see you have your choice of a wide variety of options to chose from. This is a much busier peninsula than Indian Lake what with the extra people coming into the restaurants, marina's, and other amenities that are offered here. Still, when you get off the two busy roads it is relativity quiet area..... if you like being close to the action, this is your spot!                                                                                                                                                                         Once again this peninsula allowed for commercial development whereas  Indian lake didn't. Old Hickory Lake fishing report Nashville, Tennessee

Nice cloudy day out on Old Hickory Lake
Nice cloudy day out on Old Hickory Lake....  perfect for fishing!
Hendersonville tn    April 13, 2016      Fished from  2 pm thru 6 pm , water temp 61 degree's calm wind (practically no wind) and overcast skies. Ended up catching 12 fish, nothing spectacular and I would say the bite was slow. Spent some time on the main lake off bayshore drive and caught 'em along the chunk rock banks.... 5 bass, 5 gill's ,1 crappie, 1 catfish mostly caught on a 1/4 oz spinnerbait.
This 1/4 oz spinnerbait has been a consistent fish catcher ,I like to add a 2" grub for extra attraction

Where is the Best place to live in Nashville tn ? Where to relocate in Middle tn

Imagine trying to answer that question when someone first presents that to you. So much depends on your own personal goals and desires. The great thing about the Nashville area is you can find a wide range of places to call home depending on your choices. If you do a search for "checklist for deciding what state to move to" https://www.google.com/#q=checklist+for+deciding+what+state+to+move+to   you have plenty of things to read and consider, but always remember there is a lot of "real life" information that only locals can provide, such as traffic congestion challenges, crime area's to avoid, etc
Looking out from a private spot on the grounds of "Rock castle" In the distance is the Sanders ferry peninsula

Along with your on line research I would suggest establishing a relationship with a Competent realtor who has your best interests as their goal. Most problems with real estate transactions can be avoided by choosing that rare person who truly believes in a fiduciary duty towards you as they help you achieve your housing goals.                                                                                                                                                                         After that, It's best to take the time to drive the area's you are considering and talk to people such as small business owners, property owners ( yard and garage sales are a great place to talk and mingle with locals), and anyone else that may help you understand your new neighborhood. Once you narrow down your search area have your Realtor do a mls search for your perfect house and then you can decide which of the houses will be your new home!                                                                           John and                                                                                                                     Debbie                                                                                                                               http://debbiemeyers.realtorDSCN5373

Fishing in Hendersonville on Old Hickory Lake , Just outside of Nashville,Tn

DSCN5419
I always gotta chuckle to myself when I see this sign at the ramps. I wonder how many people have driven right into the water? 🙂
Hendersonville is known as the "city by the lake" because a good bit of Old Hickory lake borders it. There is no less than 9 launch areas that I frequent and they are all free to launch your boat! There is good fishing to be found at all of them, also there is  plenty of opportunity for shore fishing as  most of the boat ramps are in nice parks that the city of Hendersonville maintains.
Sanders ferry park is a huge beautiful park with a nice boat ramp and plenty of access for shore fisherman... this nice point is easily acessable with just a short walk from where you park your car.

Looking out from one of my favorite shore fishing spots it's funny to see a heron on a chunk of submerged wood. Seeing Blue Heron is always a good sign that you are in an area where baifish are present

Seeing Blue Heron is always a good sign that you are in an area where baitfish are  present                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     If you have a boat you can really increase your fishing success by being able to "hunt"  'em down. Everybody has their favorite parts of Old Hickory, but don't worry, if you are new to the lake you can pick one area at a time and get to know it and you will catch fish!     Spring time is a great time to be on the water as fish move to the shallows to do their annual spawning. Depending on the weather March thru June is 'Prime' time. As summer and hotter weather approaches most fish move to off-shore structure and deeper water. With fishing ,along with other things in life, being at the right place at the right time really pays off and I have had some of my best catches when I can get my lazy tail up real early and be on the water before sun-up!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 I'll be going into more detail on the fishing available and also some key features to look for at each part of the lake when i feature each access area individually, But if your new to the area ,  keep it simple , grab some live bait and your favorite rod and reel and get out there and catch some fish!         John

Kelly performing on American Idol
O.K. I admit it I'm an old guy, came up in the '70's, so I was exposed to the greatest music ever made and it takes a good bit to impress me...  but when i saw Kelly Clarkson's performance of her new song "piece by piece" I was blown away. Now, I was always aware of Kelly's super success after idol but after seeing her on the last season of American Idol and learning of her back story I gotta say this : I Love Me Some Kelly Clarkson!
idol-02-b
When Debbie told me the story of this denim outfit worn (and made) by Kelly on her idol audition I was blown away. Had me thinking this could be a song to rival Dolly's "coat of many colors"
Her struggles and challenges are all part of who she is and her success is a great thing.....  I often fish within sight of her house here on Old Hickory lake and one day as I was launching my old bass boat at the neighborhood ramp I encountered a fella who was putting in his Ski boat along with his young kids. I really didn't pay much attention to what he was doing, but he was in front of me preparing to put in and must have had something slowing him down, so he politely pulled around behind me to let me go first. As I put in,I thought to myself wow that is a very aware and nice gesture. As I went to my first fishing spot I noticed the ski boat going over to the pier at Kelly's house and then I figured it out that it was Kelly's husband Brandon....  So..  Not only am I a fan of Kelly's but also of Brandon.                                                                                                              cropped-cropped-DSCN5371-1.jpg                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Thanks,                                                                                                                      John  and                                                                                                            Debbie      http://debbiemeyers.realtor

Gone Fishing!
Gone Fishing!
Hendersonville, Wednesday April 6th                                                               Fished from 9:30am - 12:30pm , Water temp. was 58 degrees and the winds were a whippin'  20 mph with gusts up to 45mph!  Definitely not a day for a novice to be out there. I stayed in the cove where I launched and fished spots that have produced well in the past and was not disappointed. I had with me 4 rods that were rigged and ready to go, and I started first with a small 1/4 oz spinner bait and immediately started catching bass up shallow in the grass/weeds. I had a milk run of 4 or 5 keys spots that I was working so with the spinner bait I could move pretty fast and then I switched to rod #2 which had a crawdad crankbait and I worked over a rock point thoroughly and BAM - 5 quality bass in about 20 minutes. Here's one of them :
Nice 18" bass caught on crawdad crankbait
Nice 18" bass caught on crawdad crankbait. Over the years I have used many different makes and model of these type baits. This particular one is a STORM Thundercraw 1/4 oz size that dives to about 5' or so. Also it is a sinking type, so you can work it in deeper water by counting it down to the depth you want. This lure has produced probably over 100 bass for me the last couple of years and I haven't lost it yet!
I was marking some nice large schools of fish in the 8 - 12 foot range so I switched to rod #3 which had on a 1/8 jig with a 3" grub and ended up catching 5 crappie topping out about 13". By now the wind was wearing me out and I finished up by moving out of the wind and using #4 rod rigged with a small jig and used small minnows -  had a few takers but missed them 🙂  ...   But that was fine because I was more than ready to load up and head home for some lunch. Hopefully next time the wind will be down so  I can get around to more of my proven springtime spots and report  more of what is going on in those area's.

I enjoy fishing that size bait with a 6 foot or so very light rod and a shimano reel with 6lb test line ... you can really enjoy playing the fish on a set-up like this one!
Thanks for reading and Good Luck on YOUR fishing!                                             John
